Why Should I Insulate My Home?
Insulation provides one of the best returns on an investment a homeowner can make. Energy prices are rising, but the return on investment provided by insulation is increasing as well. As a rule of thumb, most building codes require a minimum of R-38 insulation in an attic, but some northern US states may require as much as R-60. Walls are usually insulated to at least R-13, while some colder climates require R-19 between the wall studs. Crawl spaces are notorious for allowing unconditioned air to leak into the interior of the structure, so most municipalities require at least R-11 insulation between the floor joists or trusses. Depending on the design of the home, adequate insulation can reduce energy costs exponentially, not to mention the environmentally friendly reduction of energy use.
Spray insulation uses advanced technology to create a material that is self-adhering, durable, and serves several functions. For example, a standard residential exterior wall is only 3 ½” deep and typically insulated with fiberglass batts. Unfortunately, this means a standard 2” x 4” wall will only effectively contain enough insulation to achieve an R-13 insulation value. To achieve a higher R value, the wall studs would have to be increased to 2” x 6” lumber. Owing to its modern design, spray foam insulation can provide potentially higher R-value, even at smaller volumes, making spray insulation a very versatile solution. Some of our clients are looking for more than just home insulation. Fortunately, spray insulation is one of the best sound proof insulation materials as well. Our spray insulation process allows the foam to absorb and dampen unwanted outdoor noise that can easily penetrate under-insulated exterior walls and garages. For those homeowners close to traffic patterns and other outdoor noises, there is no better solution than spray insulation. Because we use only the best materials at Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, our materials will outperform other insulation materials by both resisting thermal transfer and dampening external sounds. |
What is Spray Foam Insulation?
Spray insulation is one of the most popular insulation methods currently used in modern construction. Spray insulation not only insulates, it provides a vapor barrier, crack sealing, and sound deadening once it has cured. At Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, our technicians use a machine called a hopper, similar to a paint sprayer. This machine sprays a very sticky liquid foam into the target area and as the foam cures, it slightly expands to fill in any voids that might create unwanted drafts. Spray insulation is very fast and effective, but in most cases is not considered a do-it-yourself project, as the job requires safety gear, special training, and expensive machinery.

Why Would I Want Spray Foam Insulation?
At Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, we do it better. Spray insulation has become very popular in modern construction due to its speed of installation, effectiveness, and durability. Unlike older forms of insulation, such as fiberglass and cellulose, spray foam is technologically advanced. For example, when installing blown fiberglass or cellulose in an attic, the material is simply piled up to a predetermined thickness wherever it lands. Unfortunately, this method does very little to seal up cracks and gaps that may be literally sucking heated air from the home.
Spray insulation is also great at resisting moisture. The vast majority of home repairs are the result of some form of water damage from either a leaky roof or unprotected wood. Spray foam insulation resists moisture better than most other forms of insulation such as batts, cellulose, and fiberglass. This feature provides a huge benefit to homeowners, because since the material is moisture resistant, mold and mildew struggle to grow. |
How is Spray Foam Insulation Better?
Most of us are familiar with pink insulation batts and foam from a red can with a yellow lid. Together these products do a good job of resisting thermal transfer and sealing up gaps. However, both products have downsides, like compaction over time and over expansion. These issues can be expensive and time consuming to correct.
Technological Advances
To be clear, the spray foam we use at Dickson Spray Foam Insulation is not the same as the expanding foam available from a can with a yellow lid. These do-it-yourself products are a different type of insulation foam known as open cell foam. Open cell foam expands considerably more than closed cell foam due to its design purpose and chemical makeup. Unless great care is taken, open cell foam can expand so much around doors and windows that they will not open, which can cause egress problems in the event of an emergency. The open cell structure of the foam also reduces the effectiveness of the material to repel water. Dickson Spray Foam Insulation addresses these concerns with technology. For example, as mentioned earlier, insulation works by trapping air in tiny pockets within the insulation material. Unfortunately, over time gravity will compact the fibers inside the batts, expelling the trapped air. By allowing the air to escape, these batts become much more dense, and thus, less effective. More R-Value Than Fiberglass, Cellulose or Batts Spray foam is faster to install and seals better than either batts or blown in fiberglass. However, perhaps the biggest benefit of spray insulation is its R-value, which is a measurement of the effectiveness of insulation. As a comparison, a standard batt designed for 2” x 4” walls will usually have an R-value of about 13. These batts are designed to fit into 3 ½” thick space, meaning they are compressed as soon as they are installed. Spray foam, however, can offer an R-value as much as 6.5 per inch, allowing the material to nearly double the R-value of batts in the same space. In addition, since spray foam is applied by a machine, there are no time consuming staplers, hammers, or tape fasteners needed. This method also prevents eventual settling, as would occur with fiberglass batts, by holding its original shape and not compacting. Because spray insulation expands slightly as it cures, it also fills in the tiny spaces between the lumber that might allow insects and debris to enter. |
Attic Insulation Is CriticalAt Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, we understand the importance of attic insulation. With energy prices on the rise, effectively insulating your home’s attic will directly result in energy cost savings. However, we do more than just blow a few inches of fiberglass or paper products into your attic. We understand how insulation works and where it is most effective. Our highly trained estimators and technicians perform a careful inspection of your attic and identify problem areas and develop a plan.
As experts in the field of insulation, we understand that gaps and cracks can allow unwanted drafts to enter the attic, resulting in unnecessary work for the HVAC system. At Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, we use only the highest quality closed cell spray foam to seal these cracks permanently, and provide the most cost effective insulation solution available anywhere. |
Wall Insulation
There may be no better use of spray insulation than within walls. We use the latest in spray foam equipment to install your wall insulation, ensuring a complete and effective bonding with the wall. The spray foam we use also forms a vapor barrier, preventing moisture from entering the structure through the insulation. The spray insulation we use at Dickson Spray Foam Insulation will work regardless of the wall thickness of your home. In fact, spray insulation does its job essentially anywhere it can be applied.

Commercial Insulation Services
At Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, commercial insulation services are a big part of our business. We understand the complexities building owners and commercial property managers face in today’s economy. Deadlines, material selection, cleanliness, and perhaps most importantly, scheduling commercial projects are our focus. Here are just a few benefits of using Dickson Spray Foam Insulation to maintain your building’s thermal envelope.
Return on Investment
Businesses must provide a safe environment for their customers, while staying profitable. In today’s business climate, that can be a big job. Energy prices are still on the rise, so commercial property managers and owners must find the balance between investing in the structure and maintaining profitability. The Dickson Spray Foam Insulation solution is designed to be cost-effective, long lasting, and easy to maintain. Many commercial buildings still in use are housing very old, ineffective insulation. These older structures tend to be drafty, large spaces that struggle to maintain a constant indoor temperature. Unfortunately, the common solution is just to adjust the thermostat and consume more energy. Obviously, this strategy is expensive and is unlikely to improve in the future without a plan. At Dickson Spray Foam Insulation, we have the experience and training to strengthen the thermal envelope of commercial spaces, saving the client money in energy expenses. We can safely remove old, contaminated insulation and replace it with the latest in spray insulation that outperforms and outlasts other insulation materials.
